Althusser attributes to Marxism a philosophical theory, an epistemology, and a series of theoretical concepts, through which he believes that Marxism seeks to view the world. (It is perhaps significant that Althusser generally does not attribute this theory to Marx, but to Marxism. Although the chatter about this book is that you just have to drag it along until you reach "Marxism and Humanism", the last essay, and then the whole thing becomes clear, is a little misleading. The most challenging of essays collected here is "On the Materialist Dialectic" which also contains the most rigorous philosophical effort in the book/5.
Marxist Philosophy – Materialism Marxist philosophy holds that the matter we see in nature is all that exists. This materialistic interpretation of the world is an essential ingredient of Marxist thought. Lenin wrote, “Matter is primary nature. Sensation, thought, consciousness are the highest products of matter organized in a certain way. So Marx’s humanism is revolutionary. But equally, the revolution he projected is humanist. This is another reason why we stress the forward-looking and developmental character of Marx’s humanism. We think this is extremely important in light of the tendency of a lot of the left to separate the humanist goal and the process of social change.
Daniel Brudney traces the development of post-Hegelian thought from Ludwig Feuerbach and Bruno Bauer to Karl Marx's work of and his Theses on Feuerbach, and concludes with an examination of The German Ideology. Brudney focuses on the transmutations of a set of ideas about human nature, the good life, and our relation to the world and to others; about how we end up with false beliefs about. His main interests are in political philosophy and 19th century philosophy—especially Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and Kant. He is the author of Schiller, Hegel, and Marx (), Marx's Method, Epistemology, and Humanism (), Marx and Ethics (), Marx and Modern Political Theory (), Hegel and the Other: A Study of the Phenomenology of Spirit (), and Nietzsche and the .
